Gambling is a risky activity involving wagering something of value on an event that is influenced by chance. It is often associated with loss of control, impulsivity, and addiction. It is also a common source of financial difficulties and stress. It is important to be able to recognize the warning signs of gambling problems, as early treatment can prevent the problems from worsening.

A growing role exists in primary care settings for the evaluation of patients for gambling disorders.1 Nevertheless, it is challenging to distinguish pathological gambling from a normal desire for entertainment and profit. While a desire for entertainment is not an addictive disorder, a pathological gambler may experience psychological and social problems that lead to unhealthy habits.

The Bible is clear that gambling is sinful (Proverbs 31:29; Proverbs 24:30; Colossians 3:1-5). It appeals to greed and covetousness and enthrones personal desires in place of God. It is also directly contrary to the Biblical commandment to love our neighbour as ourselves, and to the Gospel commandment to put others before self (1 Timothy 6:8).

The psychology of gambling is complex, with many factors contributing to a person’s addiction. These include the size of an early win, boredom susceptibility, a poor understanding of random events, use of escape coping and depression. It is important to remember that most people who struggle with gambling don’t start out as problem gamblers; they were once just people who enjoyed the excitement of betting on sports and the lottery.
